Frauenbank: servers for .yu

network · 2017 · project site ↗

A blockchain smart contract and Wi-Fi network named after the first women-owned and -operated banking cooperative, founded in Berlin in 1910. Structured as a decentralized autonomous organization on the Ethereum network, it was created by Irena Haiduk with jesus.d and Daniel Sauter for the 2017 Whitney Biennial.

By joining the ‘Whitney Frauenbank’ .yu network and using the Frauenbank app, female-identified visitors are guided through acquiring membership and taking part in the future of the cooperative. The immutable peer-to-peer contract equalizes power — each member claims one vote regardless of the number of shares held. Contributed assets are put toward the purchase of Serbian land, owing to a 2017 law permitting foreign acquisition of real estate, generating a cooperative space and a new kind of property that is neither private nor public, grounded in former Yugoslavia’s digital and physical domain.
